It just boggles my mind how underrated Distant Worlds is.Ĭlick to expand.Have you played vic2? war is litterally the least itnresting part of it. I can't comment on GalCiv3 (played too much Civ in my years, not interested) or Endless Space 2 (i liked the "endless games" tough), as i have never played them. I haven't played Stellaris since almost a year (outside of a quick MP session to see the, to me, underwhelming DLC content), yet i'm still playing DW after almost 2 thousand hours played. The fact that DW was mostly made by one man and Stellaris by the biggest "grand strategy" developer studio on the planet makes it even more remarkeable. Even the bad UI is often more accessible than Stellaris' (expansion planner, planet list). Just compare galaxy creation screens or the economy (unlike Stellaris, DW has one) to get an impression on the differences, but it obviously goes way deeper than that.
They improved some aspects (exploration and anomalies, for instance) but overall it doesn't come close to Distant Worlds. Many things in Stellaris are inspired from it, a comment regarding that from a dev/marketing was what made me buy it. If you don't mind a clunky and sometimes plain ugly UI and no multiplayer, Distant Worlds Universe (game with all DLC's) still is the best 4X game by far.
